When are fillings necessary?

Dental fillings are necessary when bacteria in your mouth, along with food and time have resulted in decay in your teeth.

The purpose of fillings is to remove the decay and restore your tooth to its full usage. Removing the decay prevents the cavity from getting bigger and will help prevent the tooth from needing either extraction or root canal treatment if the decay reached the pulp of the tooth.

What type of dental fillings are there?

Composite fillings: These are white, tooth coloured fillings. Recent developments in the way composites are made have resulted in strong, long lasting filling materials. Being tooth coloured, they are favoured for front teeth and in the smile line.

Glass Ionomer Cements GIC: These are tooth coloured dental materials that usually have a high fluoride content which allows them to help strengthen decayed tooth tissue. They can be used in small fillings, under composite as a base or lining material and also to cement crowns and bridges onto teeth.

Temporary fillings: Sometimes, when the decay in the tooth is very close to the pulp, the dentist may decide to put a temporary filling on the tooth after the decay is cleaned, to determine whether the tooth can be filled or if it needs a root canal procedure or extraction. Once the temporary filling is placed, as long as the tooth doesn’t have any pain, you will need to have a permanent filling placed after 2-4 weeks. If the tooth starts getting painful, then filling the tooth is no longer an option, a root canal treatment or extraction would probably required.

How do I prevent cavities?

The best way to try and prevent cavities or tooth decay is to brush twice a day with a fluoridated tooth paste and floss regularly. Mouthwashes should be used at least half an hour after brushing and visit your dentist at least once a year for a full checkup and cleaning. Diet also plays a big part in the formation of tooth decay. A diet high in sugary and acidic foods will promote the formation of tooth decay.

What happens if I do not get my decayed teeth filled?

If left untreated, the decay in you tooth will become bigger and deeper, and eventually reach the nerves of the tooth and start causing pain. Once it has reached this stage, your tooth can no longer be filled and will need to be root canal treated or extracted.
